New and Improved Lithophane Filament Formula — What Does That Mean?

Over the past year, we’ve been refining our lithophane PLA filament with one goal in mind: producing the BEST lithophanes with consistent results. Some of y'all have undoubtedly seen the stickers on your recent spools. We were so excited to get it out there that we even put a typo on hundreds of them... Oops!

Through extensive testing and customer feedback, we focused on improving material flow, ductility, and—most importantly—how light transmits through the finished print.

The result is a filament that delivers smoother gradients, higher contrast, and rich tones across a wide range of lithophane designs. All development and validation was done using our own Lithophane Maker desktop software, allowing us to test the material across real-world use cases from start to finish.

You might want to change up your minimum and maximum thickness settings with these new formulas! Here's a table with our general choices! It will be affected by things such as your backlight and your image, but this is a good place to start!

Classic White Warm White Crisp Gray Cool Gray Sepia
Minimum Thickness (mm) 0.7 – 0.9 0.7 – 0.9 0.6 – 0.7 0.7 – 0.9 0.8 – 1.0
Maximum Thickness (mm) 2.8 – 3.1 2.8 – 3.1 2.6 – 2.8 2.8 – 3.1 2.9 – 3.2

Ready to try the updated formula? Our Lithophane PLA filament is available now, and we’ve also put together a beginner’s guide to help you get the best results from your prints.

If you have questions or want to share your results, we’d love to hear from you!
